A few simple ways to keep the FUN in FALL this year

Fun Fall activities - check up with your physical therapist to stay healthy this fall

Many of us in North Dakota are thinking… we didn’t get very lucky with the weather this year. An extremely long winter, hardly any spring, and a cooler than average summer.

Now fall is already upon on us. Where did the time go?!

Although fall is one of my favorite times of the year, it does bring some weary feelings of winter fast approaching. Fall also brings a more scheduled lifestyle for most and can get busy with fall activities, sporting events, and outside projects needing some attention.

So how do we keep the FUN in FALL?

Take advantage of cooler days without the humidity and take your workout outside. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, maybe a walk to the playground with your kiddos, a bike ride with your neighbor or grandkids, or one last round of golf (skip the cart for added cardio).

We like to think about “spring cleaning” as a time to reorganize and get a fresh start to the summer months. How about a fall clean-up to prepare for winter?

It could be as simple as getting winter boots and hats out of storage, putting away summer clothes, cleaning up the garden or raking leaves. Another fall favorite is opening the windows and letting in fresh air!

You may be surprised how much this can make a difference in your overall mood and it might give you that little burst of extra energy for the never-ending “To Do” list.

Another favorite fall activity for my family is making a trip to a corn maze, fall festival, or pumpkin patch. Not only is this fun for the whole family, but it keeps us active at the same time.

With all these fun ideas it is always important to keep in mind safety. Whether you’re taking a walk around the block or picking up a pumpkin at the farm, if you have or do experience any aches or pains it may be a good idea to check in with your Physical Therapist.

Always be mindful of your posture and lifting mechanics, if something feels too heavy or something doesn’t feel right, don’t try to push through things.

A check-in with your PT could be just what you need to make sure you don’t miss out on one of the greatest times of the year.
