When you think of resistance training, the first thought that comes to mind for many people are heavy weights banging on the ground, power squats and lines of people doing the bench press.
Yes, that is resistance training.
However, many other methods of resistance training are just as effective and are far less intense. One of the most overlooked areas of resistance training and is often a great place to start is core strengthening.
Your core muscles consist of the rectus abdominus (abs), the obliques, the erector spinae, and many other muscles along your spine and all the way down to your pelvic floor. These muscles are easy to train and provide you with a variety of health benefits, especially if you are struggling with day-to-day activities such as bending over to put your socks on or reaching for something at the top of your cupboard.
The reason these muscles are so important for these seemingly routine tasks is that they provide the body with stability and balance. Often times if you are suffering from low back pain, have a hard time maintaining proper posture, and get fatigued easily, it is due to having weak core muscles. If you are worried about having a fall, strengthening your core muscles is a great way to reduce your risk and make you feel safe.
There are a variety of exercises that you can perform to strengthen your core with no equipment at all, such as planks, crunches, and bridges. A full list of equipment-free core exercises and instructions can be found at the link posted below.
However, an even better way to introduce yourself to core strengthening and start your fitness journey is to check out EGYM at Apex!
