Acute Sprain/Strain
An acute strain or sprain of the midback is an injury to the muscles, tendons or ligaments of the middle back. Acute pain typically comes on suddenly, usually due to an injury. The sprain or strain may be a result of prolonged overuse of these muscles from poor back mechanics or posture. Acute injuries heal within a few days to a few weeks. Physical therapy can decrease pain and inflammation to assist with the healing process.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include pain in the midback, ribs or near shoulder blades, muscle spasms or swelling. Pain intensifies with movement of the affected areas.
