The lumbar spine of the lower back is made up of 5 vertebrae that are separated by fibrocartilaginous cushions called intervertebral discs. These discs are important in the functioning of the spine because they act like shock absorbers. Over time, the discs can start to degenerate, narrowing the space between the vertebrae. This can lead to one or more of your nerves being compressed.
Symptoms of lumbar DDD include lower back pain and stiffness, sometimes worse at the end of the day. If there is compression on one or more of the nerves you may experience pain in one or both of your legs, weakness, numbness or tingling into the buttocks/hips or down the legs. Some people have lumbar DDD and are asymptomatic. In other cases, lumbar DDD may lead to chronic low back pain.
