Sports Hernia
A core muscle injury, commonly called a “sports hernia,” is the result of tears or weakening to the deep layers of tissue in the abdominal wall. This is usually the result of stress from repetitive twisting, kicking, and turning at high speeds. A hernia can also be caused by trauma such as a motor vehicle accident or falls. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
Symptoms include:
- Sharp pain to the groin region with activity
- Coughing or sneezing
- Minimal pain when resting
- Tenderness to the touch around the lower abdominal area
At Apex, your physical therapist will perform a full evaluation of the area and work with you to create a plan of care that best suits your needs and goals.
