Thoracic Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

Thoracic Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

The thoracic spine in your midback is made up of 12 vertebrae that are separated by fibrocartilaginous cushions called intervertebral discs.  These discs are important in the functioning of the spine because they act like shock absorbers.  Over time, the discs can start to degenerate, narrowing the space between the vertebrae.  This can lead to one or more of your nerves being compressed.    Thoracic DDD occurs much less often than in the cervical or lumbar spine because the thoracic spine is less mobile.

Symptoms of thoracic DDD include midback pain, stiffness and loss of range of motion.  The pain may radiate from the back to the ribs or chest, or you may experience numbness or tingling in these areas.
