Degenerative joint disease (DJD), also known as osteoarthritis, of the thoracic spine is a condition in which the protective cartilage of the bones in the midback wears down or degenerates, leading to inflammation and pain. DJD is the result of wear and tear over time due to aging, repetitive stress from heavy lifting, or trauma such as from a fall or motor vehicle accident.
Symptoms
Symptoms of thoracic DJD include midback pain and stiffness. The pain may radiate from the back to the ribs or chest. Bending backwards or rotating may be painful or difficult.
