Whiplash
Whiplash, also known as a neck sprain or strain, is an injury to the neck caused by a sudden forceful back-and-forth motion of the neck, much like that of cracking a whip. This acceleration-deceleration force can cause damage to muscles, ligaments, nerves and bones of the neck. Car accidents are a common cause of whiplash, but it may also be the result of a sports-injury or trauma, such as a fall.
Symptoms
Onset of symptoms are usually within 24 hours of injury. Symptoms include pain, tenderness and stiffness in the neck, headache, and loss of motion in your neck. In some cases, people may suffer a concussion in addition to the whiplash.
