Snow removal is pain, but don’t make it HURT

tips for a safe, pain free snow removal

Yes its January and yes you will shovel more this winter

If you are anything like me, you are already sick of this winter and all the snow we have had.

Unfortunately, since it’s only January and we live in North Dakota, all the shoveling you have been doing is likely going to continue. With that, typically comes a sore back, hips, shoulders, and knees.

Although there are different ways to move snow, it’s problematic because there is no real easy way to do so. The best thing to do is utilize proper body mechanics and reduce how much you try to lift at a time. Doing so will help prevent injuries or pain during the wintry months.

Tips to try and prevent injury while shoveling:

  • Utilize an ergonomic shovel that fits YOU.
  • Move the snow often to reduce how much accumulates in a single spot
  • Push or blow the lighter snow
  • Utilize your knees and hips when throwing the snow to reduce strain on your back.
  • Decrease the amount of snow in the shovel with each scoop
  • Alternate sides when twisting and throwing the snow
  • Keep a good wide stance
  • Ask for help

Even with these few tips and using good body mechanics, injuries still can, and will, happen. Always remember that when these types of injuries occur, save yourself time and contact Apex right away for an appointment!

You normally don’t even have to go to your doctor first. Hope you all stay warn and safe the rest of the winter!
