It’ll Go Away, Everything’s Fine

I’ve been a Physical Therapist for nearly 20 years and if I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard “I thought it would go way”, “I thought it was just a muscle” or “I thought I just tweaked something; I would have a TON of nickels.  Look, I get it, I’ve done this myself recently.  Last year after a run, I had some knee pain.  I tried some self-treatment (dry needling, cupping, stretching, etc.) with little to no help.  This pain kept me from running and other activities that I enjoyed for about 9 months.  It wasn’t until I scheduled an appointment with one of my co-workers, was evaluated and completed physical therapy plan of care that I was able to return to the activities that I enjoyed.  Had I scheduled physical therapy sooner I would have avoided a lot of frustration and returned to running sooner than I was able to.

Scheduling physical therapy sooner rather than later offers numerous advantages that can significantly impact your recovery and overall well-being. Here are some key practical advantages of early intervention in physical therapy:

  1. Faster Recovery: One of the primary benefits of starting physical therapy early is the potential for a faster recovery. By addressing the underlying issues and developing a personalized treatment plan early on, patients can improve their strength, flexibility, and mobility more quickly. This can help them return to their normal activities, work, and daily routines sooner.
  2. Preventing Further Injury: Delaying physical therapy can lead to compensatory movement patterns and overuse of certain muscles or joints, which can increase the risk of further injury. By addressing the root cause of the problem early on, physical therapy can help prevent secondary injuries and complications, ultimately reducing the risk of long-term damage.
  3. Reduced Pain and Discomfort: Early intervention in physical therapy can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with musculoskeletal injuries, chronic conditions, or post-operative rehabilitation. Through targeted exercises, manual therapy, and other interventions, physical therapists can help patients manage pain more effectively and improve their quality of life.
  4. Improved Function and Mobility: Physical therapy aims to restore and improve a patient’s function and mobility. By starting therapy early, patients can regain strength, flexibility, and coordination more efficiently, leading to improved movement patterns and overall function. This can enhance independence and quality of life.
  5. Fewer Treatment Sessions: In many cases, patients who start physical therapy early require fewer treatment sessions overall compared to those who delay seeking care. By addressing the issue promptly, patients can make progress more quickly and may need fewer sessions to achieve their rehabilitation goals. This can save time and money in the long run.
  6. Preventing Long-Term Complications: Early intervention in physical therapy can help prevent long-term complications associated with musculoskeletal injuries, chronic conditions, or post-operative recovery. By addressing the problem early and implementing appropriate interventions, patients can reduce the risk of developing secondary issues that may require more extensive treatment in the future.
  7. Improved Outcomes: Research has shown that early intervention in physical therapy is associated with better treatment outcomes and higher patient satisfaction. By starting therapy sooner, patients have a greater chance of achieving their rehabilitation goals, improving their overall health and well-being, and returning to their normal activities with confidence.
  8. Education and Prevention: Physical therapists not only provide treatment but also educate patients on proper body mechanics, injury prevention strategies, and self-management techniques. By seeking therapy early, patients can learn how to prevent future injuries, manage their condition effectively, and maintain their health and well-being in the long term.

In North Dakota, physical therapists are uniquely positioned to help patients recover quicker.  North Dakota is a direct access state for physical therapy care, which means that most patients DO NOT need a physician referral for physical therapy to be covered by insurance.  This allows patients to schedule a physical therapy appointment without being seen by their physician which can save weeks of sitting around waiting to see your doctor and instead already being on the road to recovery in physical therapy.

Overall, seeking physical therapy sooner rather than later offers numerous practical advantages that can positively impact your recovery, function, and quality of life. Early intervention is key to achieving optimal outcomes and preventing long-term complications associated with musculoskeletal injuries and other conditions.
