Physical Therapy can treat that?

JUNE 12-18 IS MEN’S HEALTH WEEK

You maybe didn’t know that pelvic health physical therapists treat male pelvic issues!

There are a lot of different dysfunctions men experience that can be helped by working with a pelvic health physical therapist. I thought I’d list a few for yo

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is any involuntary loss of urine. Men may experience this after a prostate surgery, with strong urgency, or with dribbling after urinating. Often, the pelvic floor muscles are weak and need to be strengthened. A pelvic health PT can help guide you through the most effective exercises for your body to improve strength and reduce leakage. See our previous blogs about post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence for more info!

Constipation

We should be having daily BMs. When we are not, often time the pelvic floor is involved. We often see muscles with impaired coordination or that are tense. A pelvic health PT can determine what is going on with your muscles and help guide you through exercises as well as hands-on treatment to improve your bowel movements.

Fecal Incontinence

Fecal incontinence is any unwanted loss of stool. Weak pelvic floor muscles are often the culprit! Just like with urinary incontinence; a pelvic floor PT can help guide you through specific and individualized strengthening exercises to reduce or eliminate fecal incontinence.

Pelvic Pain

Approximately 20% of men will experience pelvic pain at some point. This can be felt deep in the pelvis, but is also often felt in the testicles as well. A tense/tight pelvic floor is often the cause of this pain. See my previous blog about male pelvic pain for more info!

Erectile Dysfunction

Although there are many causes to ED, a weak pelvic floor can be one of them! When pelvic muscles are weak, they are not able to keep blood in the penis which can result in ED symptoms. Working with a pelvic PT can help strengthen these muscles to reduce ED!
