ASTYM Tissue Therapy
Pain is a symptom of a deeper problem. At Apex Physical Therapy and Wellness Center, our goal is always to discover the source of your pain, so we can treat the cause and not just the symptom. Astym® therapy is one of the innovative tools we use to locate and treat the root causes of your pain.
What Is Astym® Therapy?
Astym treatment was scientifically developed to help alleviate certain root causes of pain and discomfort. It fits under the category of Manual Therapy because of its specialized, hands-on application. This manual process uses specific tools and target movement and pressure to stimulate the breakdown of scar tissue and regeneration of soft tissues. In between treatments, patients are encouraged to remain active and given prescribed motion therapies to complement the Astym treatments.
If your physical therapist or physician has determined that Astym may be an appropriate treatment for your concerns, a treatment plan will be developed that will include several Astym treatments. The number of treatments required will vary depending on several individual factors.
Who can benefit from ASTYM Therapy?
Many athletes and informed patients are seeking out certified Astym therapy. Your certified Astym therapist will be able to advise you whether Astym might be beneficial for your joint and soft tissue concerns. Some of the most common complaints which can benefit from Astym treatments are:
- Frozen shoulder
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer’s elbow
- Carpel tunnel
- Bursitis
- Degenerative joint disease
- Achilles’ tendon
- Sprained ankle
- Plantar fasciitis
- Patella femoral syndrome
- Other musculoskeletal dysfunctions
Certified Astym Therapists
Only those trained and certified in Astym treatment can provide this innovative, regenerative therapy. All our Astym therapists have been trained and certified in the proper application of this treatment. Astym is often confused with IASTM (Instrument Soft Tissue Mobilization), which is a type of tool assisted massage. Although Astym therapy utilizes tools on soft tissue, it is NOT a massage technique. It is a highly researched and specialized therapy, which must be applied properly to achieve the effective and safe results.
At Apex, Astym treatments may be recommended as a part of your physical therapy treatment plan. You can rest assured that your treatments will be safe, effective, and always performed by a therapist certified in Astym treatments.
