If you have ever been with one of our pelvic rehab physical therapists, you more than likely have seen or have had an assessment from our SEMG (Surface Electromyography) biofeedback machine. This non-invasive assessment allows both the patient and physical therapists another form of “feedback” of your pelvic floor muscles. So, what is biofeedback? Biofeedback is a mind-body technique that can use visual or auditory feedback to help teach patients to recognize and receive information about their body, in our case muscle “tension” or tone in the pelvic floor.
We are excited to also offer another assessment tool -Diagnostic Ultrasound!
Diagnostic ultrasound provides the physical therapist and patient a real-time visual assessment of the pelvic floor muscles and related structures. Research has shown that diagnostic ultrasound is a reliable and objective measure to evaluate pelvic floor muscle contraction. Not only does this ultrasound allow us further assessment and feedback of the pelvic floor but can be used in the assessment and treatment of diastasis recti and other lumbopelvic conditions.
Diagnostic ultrasound is similar to the SEMG biofeedback in that it is non-invasive and painless to the patient. Diagnostic ultrasound has also been shown to be effective in the assessment and treatment of our many of our patient populations, including men’s health, for different bowel/bladder dysfunctions such as increased urinary urge, frequency, and incontinence.
Rehabilitative Ultrasound will allow our physical therapists to:
- Identify and assess deep muscles that are normally hard to evaluate
- Give patients real-time visual feedback during dynamic movements
- Gain objective measures of your muscle function and health
- Allow us to implement the best training and rehabilitation techniques individualized to each patient
- Monitor progress to treatment
